Would you rather stay on top of the mountain, or hope someone can fix you after you fall...?

Enjoy old classic poem and my version of a well known nursery rhyme for a clear illustration of this week's healthy thought.

The Dangerous Cliff

'Twas a dangerous cliff, as they freely confessed,
Though to walk near its crest was so pleasant;
But over its terrible edge there had slipped
A duke and full many a peasant.
So the people said something would have to be done,
But their projects did not at all tally;
Some said, "Put a fence 'round the edge of the cliff,"
Some, "An ambulance down in the valley."

But the cry for the ambulance carried the day,
For it spread through the neighboring city;
A fence may be useful or not, it is true,
But each heart became full of pity
For those who slipped over the dangerous cliff;
And the dwellers in highway and alley
Gave pounds and gave pence, not to put up a fence,
But an ambulance down in the valley.

"For the cliff is all right, if you're careful," they said,
"And, if folks even slip and are dropping,
It isn't the slipping that hurts them so much
As the shock down below when they're stopping."
So day after day, as these mishaps occurred,
Quick forth would those rescuers sally
To pick up the victims who fell off the cliff,
With their ambulance down in the valley.

Then an old sage remarked: "It's a marvel to me
That people give far more attention
To repairing results than to stopping the cause,
When they'd much better aim at prevention.
Let us stop at its source all this mischief," cried he,
"Come, neighbors and friends, let us rally;
If the cliff we will fence, we might almost dispense
With the ambulance down in the valley."

"Oh he's a fanatic," the others rejoined,
"Dispense with the ambulance? Never!
He'd dispense with all charities, too, if he could;
No! No! We'll support them forever.
Aren't we picking up folks just as fast as they fall?
And shall this man dictate to us? Shall he?
Why should people of sense stop to put up a fence,
While the ambulance works in the valley?"

But the sensible few, who are practical too,
Will not bear with such nonsense much longer;
They believe that prevention is better than cure,
And their party will soon be the stronger.
Encourage them then, with your purse, voice, and pen,
And while other philanthropists dally,
They will scorn all pretense, and put up a stout fence
On the cliff that hangs over the valley.

Better guide well the young than reclaim them when old,
For the voice of true wisdom is calling.
"To rescue the fallen is good, but 'tis best
To prevent other people from falling."
Better close up the source of temptation and crime
Than deliver from dungeon or galley;
Better put a strong fence 'round the top of the cliff
Than an ambulance down in the valley.

The best 'fence' is a wellness lifestyle. Without it, you are almost certain to fall. And once you fall, the ambulance may not be able to help you. Case in point:

Humpty dumpty sat on a wall.
Humpty dumpty had a great fall.
All the king's doctors and all the king's men
couldn't put Humpty together again.

You are beautiful and perfect!

You have read that before on this blog, haven't you? I refer to that statement as "The Basic Truth."

I shot these mirror image photos at the Coeur d'Alene Resort marina a couple of weeks ago. As you can see, the water was like glass!

I would venture a guess that, within the framework of today’s healthcare system, you have never had anyone (except me) tell you, “You are beautiful and perfect.” That is the opposite of how most of today’s healthcare world looks at people. Most health practitioners – conventional as well as alternative – look at you in terms of what is, or may become, “wrong” with you. Chances are, you look at yourself the same way.

But, that’s backwards. Approaching health to fix or prevent what is wrong is a perspective that only blurs the truth, even if it seems real. Take a look at the photographs above. Pretty cool, aren’t they? But, guess what? They’re upside down!

Now look at the photos below. They are the right side up mirror images of the ones above. Notice how much clearer they are. And, although the upside down photos appear clear at first; once you compare them to the right side up ones, you can see they’re just a bit off.

“You are beautiful and perfect!”

Amazing how an accurate perspective brings clarity!

Convenience can be bad for your health.

Quite some time ago, it seems, there was an old farmer who still had not had a telephone installed in his home. After many months of persuading, the farmer’s son—now a grownup city slicker, wise to the ways of the world—finally convinced his cantankerous old dad to have a telephone installed. “After all,” the son had pointed out, “a telephone is such a wonderful convenience.”

One day, the son paid a visit to the old homestead. After dinner, he and his father were sitting on the front porch enjoying the singing birds and watching the sun sink slowly beneath the rolling wheat fields. The phone rang.

“Aren’t you going to answer it?” asked the son.

“Nope,” replied the father. After seven rings the caller hung up and the phone fell silent.

“Why didn’t you answer the phone?” asked the son.

“Wasn’t convenient,” replied the wise old gentleman as he continued to enjoy the colorful sunset.

Healing is a lot like learning to snowboard...

Atop Schweitzer Mountain
Photo by Kathleen Cricket Windsong, 2009

My tailbone hurts. Still.

Last Sunday, Cricket and I hit the slopes on Schweitzer Mountain. We had a great time, as always.

I just started snowboarding last year and I'm getting better and better the more I ride. That doesn't mean that each time is progressively better than the last.

A couple of weeks ago, on a Friday night, I felt like I took a quantum leap forward in my skill level. I was doing things I had never done and going places I had never gone. Then, just two days later, I felt like a raw beginner again. No matter how I hard I tried, I couldn't stay on my feet. Then, last Sunday, just a week ago, I did better than I had ever done prior. Even so, I took my most painful fall yet. Square on my sacrum, on solid ice, as I was getting into a lift line. Ouch! And I do mean OUCH!

As this past week has progressed, my symptoms have shifted. One morning I might feel relatively pain free and the next I may be awakened by throbbing pain. But I know that as long as I am doing what I need to do to facilitate the expression of life through Chiropractic, massage, yoga, more Chiropractic, more yoga, moderate physical activity, healthy nutrition, and plenty of clear water; I can trust the healing process.

Any human process -- snowboarding, educated learning, growing, and even healing a bruised bum -- entails ups and downs...ebs and flows.

Healing is change, growth and evolution. It is a dynamic, ever-changing cycle directed by an Innate Intelligence that is more brilliant and complex than your educated mind can even begin to comprehend.

Trust your Innate Intelligence!
