Convenience can be bad for your health.

Quite some time ago, it seems, there was an old farmer who still had not had a telephone installed in his home. After many months of persuading, the farmer’s son—now a grownup city slicker, wise to the ways of the world—finally convinced his cantankerous old dad to have a telephone installed. “After all,” the son had pointed out, “a telephone is such a wonderful convenience.”

One day, the son paid a visit to the old homestead. After dinner, he and his father were sitting on the front porch enjoying the singing birds and watching the sun sink slowly beneath the rolling wheat fields. The phone rang.

“Aren’t you going to answer it?” asked the son.

“Nope,” replied the father. After seven rings the caller hung up and the phone fell silent.

“Why didn’t you answer the phone?” asked the son.

“Wasn’t convenient,” replied the wise old gentleman as he continued to enjoy the colorful sunset.
